Sprint Projects
CO2nstructZero in partnership with industry partners is delivering a series of sprint projects. These projects provide deep dive focus on specific issues of interest to and impact on the sector through the lens of NetZero.
Each project operates independently and is overseen by a project steering group. The opportunity to join and participate in these projects is an exclusive benefit for those companies who have joined CO2nstructZero as Business Champions and Partners.
Sprint 1 - Zero Diesel Routemap in partnership with HS2 and CECA
The UK has made the commitment to be carbon net zero by 2050. For the construction industry this will include reducing and eliminating the sector’s use of diesel, the dominant fuel in construction across the UK and accelerating alternative solutions.
In 2023 the Construction Leadership Council responded to this challenge by publishing the Zero Diesel Routemap. This ambitious document sets out an action plan to cut diesel use by 78 per cent by 2035.
To support the delivery of the plan, there are industry-led workstreams that cover the four key themes:
- Improving Efficiency – Using Best Practice
- Transition to Cleaner Fuels
- Transition to Electric
- Wider Industry Support
This microsite provides details of each of these workstreams, including the industry experts involved in each, the actions they are delivering, the products produced on behalf of industry, and news relating to their work.
Each workstream is also generating case studies

Five Client Carbon Commitments in partnership with Lower Thames Crossing
The UK construction industry and builds and maintains the infrastructure that we all need as we go about our daily lives, and is vitally important for the UK’s economic prosperity. However, construction is also a significant contributor to the UK’s carbon emissions, and it is time for us to take action.
CO2nstruct Zero is calling upon clients to act with the launch of our Five Client Carbon Commitments – simple, practical steps that organisations can take to show how they are reducing their carbon emissions and by when.
The Five Client Carbon Commitments are:
- Procure for low carbon construction and provide incentives in our contracts
- Set phase out dates for fossil fuel use
- Eliminate the most carbon intensive concrete products
- Eliminate the most carbon intensive steel products
- Adopt PAS 2080, Carbon Management in Infrastructure, as a common standard
Six organisations have taken the bold step to be the first to sign up – we welcome the leadership shown by Anglian Water, Heathrow, the Lower Thames Crossing, National Highways, Northumbrian Water and Sellafield Ltd – and invite other organisations to join them.
