Building Safety: Culture Change in the Built Environment

The Industry Safety Steering Group (ISSG) has published its fourth report on the progress in encouraging culture change among groups within the built environment sector.

The ISSG chaired by Dame Judith Hackitt was set up to scrutinise the built environment industry’s proposals and progress towards culture change, on behalf of the Secretary of State for the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. The role of the Group is to provide constructive challenge, recommend actions, overcome obstacles and make proposals to accelerate change with all actors in the system.

The ISSG believes that the construction industry and broader actors in the system still need to do a lot more to commit to building safety and to demonstrate that their commitment is driven by the right motivation.

The CLC welcomes the report and recognises the ongoing challenge to industry outlined by the ISSG. It is now up to the whole built environment sector to embrace this challenge and ensure that all buildings are safe for those who live and work in them. These changes are not just for Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs) and those who work on them, the changes are for everyone, and we all need to take that on board.
