Contracts for Innovation: Resource Efficient Construction Impacts

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), in collaboration with Innovate UK, will invest up to £3 million towards projects in the construction chemicals and automotive sectors to support organisations to trial and carry out impact validation reports of resource efficiency technologies, building on the DESNZ Unlocking Resource Efficiency research. This call is currently open and will close on Wednesday 27th August – further details on the scope can be found here and a general summary is copied below:

In the construction sector specifically, solutions to be supported will improve resource efficiency and reduce lifecycle emissions across the construction and construction materials sectors.

Eligible themes for the construction competition:

  • reductions in the embodied carbon of new buildings, retrofit of existing buildings, and infrastructure through the use of lower carbon materials, such as low carbon cements, timber or cross-laminated timber framing instead of masonry
  • reuse of construction products and components, such as; structural steel, concrete, woodwork, flooring
  • lifetime extension and re-purposing of buildings and infrastructure
  • lean design of buildings and structures, for example, to reduce over-specification and reduce resource use
  • design for disassembly, reuse, and recycling
  • recovery of materials and components for reuse and recycling
