The UK has made the commitment to be carbon net zero by 2050. For the construction industry this will include reducing and eliminating the sector’s use of diesel, the dominant fuel in construction across the UK and accelerating alternative solutions.

In 2023, the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) responded to this challenge by publishing the Zero Diesel Routemap, an ambitious document which sets out an action plan to cut diesel use by 78 per cent by 2035.

Produced in partnership with CECA and HS2, the delivery of the plan is supported by four industry-led workstreams covering the key themes:

The policy map was created to identify current government ambition and policy development in relation to CO2nstructZero’s Performance Framework.

It details announced policy that will or could help our industry to drive change. As a number of key Net Zero policy areas are devolved and owing to Scotland’s legislative function we have included a seperate column for  it.

The RAG rating relates to the individual Performance Framework metric. It is not an indicator of, nor should the RAG rating be used to measure government policy.

This version is the latest, current as of 18 October 2022.

This projects’ focus is on the construction workforce (i.e. cars and vans). Initially, it will not focus on HGVs. At present, only 5% of vans sold to the sector are electric.

This project will seek to influence relevant policy and identify what the accelerators and blockers are for businesses in the construction sector.
