Karl Whiteman

Karl is trained in construction management and started his career as a site engineer for a main contractor. He joined Berkeley Group in 1996 as a Construction Director and has been a Divisional Managing Director since 2009. In this role he’s led some of the country’s most challenging long-term urban regeneration projects, including Kidbrooke Village and Royal Arsenal Riverside, both in Greenwich.

Karl is responsible for Berkeley’s building safety and quality assurance policy, standards and management systems, which are designed to meet the requirements of the 2022 Building Safety Act. He also leads on group-wide health and safety strategy.

Karl contributes to a number of industry bodies including the Construction Leadership Council, Build UK and the UK Green Building Council, and is working with government departments and regulatory bodies to support the development of building safety regulations. 

As Industry Sponsor for the Construction Leadership Council’s Building Safety Workstream, Karl leads a team of industry experts focussed on:

·       Clarifying construction product information and certification.
