Asbestos Risk – A One-Stop Guide for Small Construction Businesses and Tradespeople

The Construction Leadership Council’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing worksteam is launching a new one-page digital-ready Asbestos Risk guide for small construction businesses and tradespeople who work with or disturb building fabric.

Asbestos poses a significant risk to builders and workers’ health, it can be found in any building built pre-2000 and is responsible for around 5000 deaths a year. With the country’s focus on retrofitting for Net Zero and a strong home-improvement market, it’s more important than ever to properly assess and mitigate the risk posed by asbestos.

The guide is an interactive, infographic-style PDF, built to provide information at-a-glance to on-the-go tradespeople as well as linking to key resources and industry-leading advice. It is digital and print ready – meaning it is as much at home on a mobile device as it is a print-out poster on site or in the office.

Asbestos Risk shows where you can commonly find asbestos in the home and commercial buildings, links to an ‘Am I at risk?’ help page, HSE guidance and reminders about the correct use of PPE. It is designed to accompany the Asbestos Network’s ‘Duty to Manage Asbestos’ flowchart, also available below.

The guide was authored by the Supporting Small Employers group of the Construction Industry Advisory Committee and has been written by small businesses, for small businesses. It is supported by the National Federation of Builders (NFB), the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) as well as the construction industry’s leading trade unions, Unite and GMB.

Clients, contractors, builders, tradespeople and sub-contractors are all encouraged to share the guide on their websites, in toolbox talks, onsite and in the office.
