Open Mosaic Habitat on Previously Developed Land (OMH) is an important and highly valued habitat within the Statutory Biodiversity Metric, therefore can present a delivery challenge for ecologists, developers and planners. However, it is not a barrier to achieving BNG.

In this document, we outline how correctly identified OMH can be handled, adhering to the Mitigation Hierarchy, to create successful outcomes for business and communities. This document provides an overview, with existing resources and case studies of the steps to take from identification through to design and planning. This information is particularly timely as there are live conversations around the treatment of OMH in the Biodiversity Net Gain system.
